The
Menorcan Garden
The
Mediterranean climate is very similar to parts of central
and southern California, South Africa's western Cape Province,
parts of Australia and along some of the coast of Chile. Here
in Menorca it is drought rather than cold that presents a
hazard to plant life. Fortunately for those who have an automatic
watering system they can enjoy a healthy garden during the
summer as well as the winter.
High winds are also a common event in Menorca, when planting
a garden we always take note of which plants will fair best
in the prevailing conditions. |
Popular
Menorcan Plants
There
are many plants that thrive in the Menorcan climate and are
a natural choice in a garden's design. Here are a few. |
Lantana
Popular
for their continuous blooming in bright colours during
summer and autumn. Once established they need only be watered
if they are showing signs of drought. Beware with small children,
the plant produces poisonous berries!. |

Oleander
Best
in full sun and once established they only need occasional
watering. Left to grow naturally it will form a multi stemmed
bush that can be trained into a tree or grown in tubs. An
evergreen with beautiful flowers of orange, white or pink
(light or dark). Great for hedging. |
Bougainvillea
A
climber that's natural habit is climbing into trees, it is
mainly used as a wall covering, as the vibrant colours look
spectacular against the white wall of a villa. Very hardy,
resistant to drought and pests, a must for any garden.
Hibiscus
This evergreen shrub or tree produces huge, beautiful flowers
during the hot season that are varied in form and colour.
Not totally hardy as a cold winter can delay their development
in early summer but still a must. |
